How did BuzzFree Prom get started?

Launched in 2003 in Texas by its founder, Liza Orchard, BuzzFree Prom was created as a positive-peer-pressure solution not only to encourage young adults not to drink alcohol or use other drugs on Prom night, but also to truly acknowledge the millions of students who already make responsible choices.

Thousands of schools nationwide already ask students to sign pledges to stay sober. BuzzFree’s goal is to enhance and complement community efforts with additional powerful and affordable curriculum, innovative ways to involve business communities, and most importantly, new methods to effectively and continually measure the impact of all our efforts.

What are the sponsor benefits for participating in BuzzFree Prom?

The program is one of the most effective and targeted ways to reach Prom goers and teens. What's more, it’s a great way to promote your product, brand and services when it matters most. While sponsors help provide schools with powerful and effective tools in the fight against alcohol and drug use, teens can benefit from the sponsors' offers, discounts and incentives in what is likely the most expensive occasion of their lives. In fact, the average prom-goer spends about $600 on this event.

What motivates the students to participate in BuzzFree Prom?

BuzzFree Prom school kits provide compelling safety posters and a DVD assembly to drive awareness of the dangers and repercussions of alcohol and drug use on Prom night or any other occasion. BuzzFree Prom is a "positive" peer-pressure solution for teens to encourage and support each other in making responsible choices.

BuzzFree rewards and incentives create even more reasons for young people to make responsible choices and educate themselves further about the consequences of alcohol and drug use. Students who sign the BuzzFree Prom Pledge receive BuzzFreebies, discounts and more from participating sponsors and merchants during prom season. In some areas, the BuzzFree ID gives teens special admission to parties, concerts and other BuzzFree events. Communities can offer endless incentives to motivate participation: the program is designed to offer rewards both online and offline, thus providing schools and interest groups everything they need to enroll a community or entire city in a BuzzFree Prom.

How do students sign up for the BuzzFree Prom promotion?

Students may participate in the BuzzFree Prom by signing a BuzzFree Prom Pledge at a participating school or online at www.buzzfreeprom.com.

Local merchants and radio stations may sponsor additional events in tandem with schools to encourage other pledge-signing opportunities. There have been a host of radio promotions, fashion shows, dress giveaways and more to promote BuzzFreedom and encourage pledge signings.

What percentage of teen alcohol-related traffic fatalities typically result during Prom season?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly one-third of young people under age 21 killed in traffic accidents die from alcohol-related causes during April, May and June. These figures do not account for other fatalities due to illegal drug use such as Ecstasy and other “club drugs”.

During typical Prom weekends in 2004, 46 percent of traffic deaths among 15-20 year-olds were alcohol-related. Of those alcohol-related fatalities, 69 percent involved a 15-20 year-old driver with alcohol in his/her system.

Why is the promotion targeted at Prom? Why not graduation, football season, etc.?

Coming soon. BuzzFree will encompass many other events and seasons that involve alcohol and other illicit drug use as well as illegal enhancement drugs such as steroids and ephedra. Unfortunately, the statistics for Prom season cannot be ignored, so this is where we started. We foresee getting into BuzzFree Season and BuzzFree Campus very soon based on our current success . Stay tuned!
